Who lived here?

William Henry Harrison Clayton, District Attorney to Judge Parker's Court.
Mr. Clayton moved to Fort Smith in 1874 to take up the position as District Attorney. He was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant.

William and his wife, Florence Barnes Clayton, bought Clayton house in 1882 and moved in with their four children, Mary Irene, Anne, Florence, and Will, Jr.  In the following years they had three more daughters, Melanie, Beatrice, and Adele. They made the house their home until 1897, when Mr. Clayton was appointed judge over the US Central District Court in McAlester,Ok.

Visitors can catch a glimpse of daily Victorian life at Clayton House.  The house is home to a large collection of Victorian furniture, books, and other items.  Visitors can enjoy a hands-on experience. All rooms are accessible to visitors and tours are led by guides certified by the National Association for Interpretation.
